Taxi out of control
A taxi travelled out of control along Cashel Street yesterday morning for about 100 yards before crashing into a shop, after the driver collapsed at the wheel. Passers-by arid ambulance men tried to revive the driver, John Thomas Kotoul, aged 56, of 638 Wainui Street, but he died soon after in the Christchurch Hospital. The taxi crashed into the back of a parked van and was deflected into the back of another car before passing between two cars and mounting the footpath. The taxi hit the concrete below the shop window of Cromb and Merritt, Ltd. It was badly damaged in the front and had to be towed away. The van first hit was pushed forward several yards and struck several motorcycles. Shoppers in the area scattered as the taxi headed for the footpath but no-one was hit.
