Food hygiene
Sir,—l appeal to the public to take a firm stand against the unhygienic practice of some food-shop assistants in not using the tongs provided to handle the food. In the last week I have bought cakes at four different places, and have had to mention each time that I prefer the food tongs to be used. These assistants do not seem to understand that money lies in people’s pockets next to handkerchiefs, dirty keys, etc., and th ‘, anyway, it is a regulation of the Health Department that the tongs be used, and the food not touched by the assistant’s hand. If only everyone purchasing cakes, etc., would take care to notice this, and speak up firmly when the need arises, we should be able to make this simple point of hygiene sink in.—Yours, etc., L. JONES. July 16. 1971.
