$6100 for Hereford
(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH. \ July 14. . Hercules appears to be a successful name for Hereford bulls; At the New Zealand Hereford Cattle Breeders* Association’s 1971 national sale in Palmerston North this week the top price was gained by Te Taumata Hercules, which was bought for $6lOO by a Masterton breeder, Mr A. D. McGregor.
The two-yeai>old bull was previously owned by A. N. McWilliam and Sons, of Masterton, but bred by Mr E. T. Buckley, of Te Kulti.
Masterton’s Hercules, therefore, follows in the footsteps of the Otago champion, Strathavon Hercules, which last year created a record when sold for $11,200. An extremely even line-up of two-year-old bulls was offered, the 33 sold realising $69,900, for an average of $2llB. This was higher than last year’s average of $1990, but $212 below the record average established in 1969 of $2330. Six bulls were passed, as was the only yearling bull offered. A two-year-old female sold for $9OO. As expected, the large bench of buyers showed a keen interest in the better-quality animals, but most cattle showed the modern trend of increased length and stretch.
About 700 persons attended the sale, held at the Manawatu A. and P. show grounds.
