River pollution
Sir,—The recent conviction of a person for throwing a bottle into the Avon is a step in the right direction toward a cleaner city. It is pleasing to see that the Drainage Board is prepared to bring individuals to court. We would like to see similar court action taken against commercial and even civil bodies when the pollution they cause results from carelessness or guilty intent Ecology is only a third of the answer, the rest lies with our individual responsibility, supported by prudently enforced laws.—Yours, etc, P. H. WILLIAMS, President, Ecology Action (Christchurch). June 17, 1971.
