FIJI APPLIES FOR AID
(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright)
SUVA, June 20. Fiji has applied to join the Colombo Plan programme for economic development, the Prime Minister (Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara) has announced.
He said that the main advantage would be that Fiji will receive technical help from countries with similar problems of economic development.
Fiji intends to take part in a proposed joint mineral prospecting programme in the South Pacific and take an inventory of its offshore resources. United Nations assistance may be sought also. The Prime Minister said that his plan had the support of Australia and New Zealand. Pacific heads of Government will meet in New Zealand on August 5. Asked about the possibility of a conflict of interests over the marketing of Fijian and Australian sugar by the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, he said that if such a conflict warranted Fiji finding its own marketing agency, it would do so.
