Kelp cutting warning
(N.Z. Press Association)
DUNEDIN, June 18.
The effects of stripping New Zealand shores of kelp Should be carefully studied before it was sold in large quantities, a visiting research professor at the University of Otago, Professor E. Conway, said in Dunedin today. Professor Conway, from Britain, is a professorial fellow in the botany department of the university for 15 months. She is doing research work on seaweeds.
Durvillea, or bull kelp,, is to be harvested from beaches around Palmerston in North Otago, for export to Japan. If large quantities were removed, this would take away cover from the in-shore fish and in-shore shell fish and small animals on which fish feed. More research was needed, Professor Conway said.
