TYPHOON FREDA
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) HONG KONG, June 18. Typhoon Freda howled out of Hong Kong towards Canton today, leaving two people dead and 29 injured, but its tailwinds and rain threaten to cause more landslides. A boulder tumbled down a hillside, crushing a shanty in which lived two families, but all managed to escape unhurt. The authorities have given a warning of further landslides as the wind-driven rain lashes Hong Kong’s rocky hillsides, on which thousands of people, mostly refugees from China, live in flimsy shacks.
Eight ships, including the 12,799-ton American freighter China Bear and the 11,092ton Russian vessel Ola, were tom from their moorings during the night, but tugboats went to their aid in heavy seas, and they rode out the storm.
Four boats capsized in the early hours of this morning, but all 25 people aboard managed to swim ashore. More than 200 people, mostly sampan-dwellers, sought refuge in Government shelters, where they were given hot meals, blankets and clothes. All schools and most offices and shops remained closed. More than six inches of rain was recorded in 24 hours.
