N.Z. man to scull at Amsterdam

AUCKLAND, June 16.

The West End rower from Otahubu, J. W. White, who is seektag overseas competition at his own expense, will seull on Saturday at Amsterdam In the Dutch national rowing championships. On June 26, White will row at Marlow, in Ireland, and on July 3 will contest the diamond sculls at Henley in the Royal Henley regatta. Runner-up to the Olympic representative M. Watkinson in this year’s New Zealand single sculls championship, White teamed up with his clubmate A Hurt in the double sculls and pushed the Watkinson brothers, Murray and Peter, to a margin of 2ft before going down in the New Zealand title race.

Hurt was selected for the New Zealand rowing squad, at present training in Christchurch for the world championships, but White was not selected. He then decided to go overseas in search of competition to improve himself. White, who is 25, bought a

new boat costing $7OO, end flew to Britain. Fresh off the plane after his long flight, and using a borrowed boat. White won the Reading regatta single sculls, setting a new course record by Bsec.

Mr D. D. Rowlands, as manager of the New Zealand rowing team, has invited White to join the New Zealand party unofficially to travel with it in Europe. White will scull at Lucerne, in Switzerland, and will also contest the other regattas in which the New Zealand team will row.

“Although he will not be a member of the New Zealand team, it is hoped that the same privileges will be extended to him on tour as will be extended to us,” said Mr Rowlands.
