Volleyball win
University A met with unexpectedly tough opposition from Smash before winning last evening's mein A grade volleyball match at the YJH.CA. University withstood a fighting display by the latest addition to the grade, while Unwood A beat its B team. 3J-J. Polo, recently promoted to the B grade, drew with Deep Freese after winning the first two sets narrowly, 12-11 and 12-8. In the other B grade game. Teachers’ College A beat Y.M.C.A.. 3-1. Riccarton High School A had a straight-sets win against Teachers* College A In the women’s grade.
University A 31, Smash 1 Although it had already lost the match by the final set. Smash undoubtedly contributed the most spectacular feature at this time, when M. Morrison put his team into an early lead with his dynamic serving. University recovered from this, thanks largely to excellent spiking by G. Tritt and Its greater albround competence finally took It to a 20-11 set win. But University, though always hard pressed, had the game virtually under control when it won the first set, 10-5, and the third, 18-11. The second set was drawn, U-aU.
Linwood A 3j, Linwood B ) With the exception of the first set, which -it won 18-8, Linwood A was never able to dominate to the extent it might have expected. Linwood B, which looked last week as If It could be the chopping-block of the competition. provided unexpectedly stern competition. However, the superior serving and greater experience of Unwood A carried It to narrow set victories. 10-8 and 13-7, and a 9-all draw.
