Inside the Embassy
“Stiff Upper Lip,” a “Comedy Playhouse” programme from CHTV3 on Wednesday, is based on a book of short stories by Lawrence Durrell, who was for some years a press attache in Beirut, Athens, Cairo, and Alexandria (hence the Alexandria Quartet). During that time he took an amused look at the Diplomatic Service and its workings. He wrote three books—of which "Stiff Upper Lip” is one—which are made up of anecdotes about life in an eccentric British Embassy behind the Iron Curtain. Richard Vernon stars as Her .Britannic Majesty’s Ambassador. Sir Reginald Polk-Mowbray, and Michael Bates is Antrobus, the First Secretary. “Stiff Upper Lip” was adapted for television by Barry Took and produced by Michael Mills.
