Fairweather rejoins basketball team

(By

R. O. DEW)

The New Zealand triaiist, J. Fairweather, rejoins the Canterbury men’s basketball representative team for the Canadian Goodwill Tournament, to be held at Blenheim this week-end.

He replaces the talented schoolboy player, S. Ferguson (Christchurch Boys’ High School), who was not available. The team will still not have its captain and 1970 New Zealand representative, K. Hessell, in spite of his apparent willingness to play for his club side, University, when it appeared in danger of losing to Y.M.C.A. last Saturday. Hessell, who seriously dislocated a finger during a representative practice a week ago was prevented from

playing by a technicality—he had omitted to put his name on the scoresheet before the start of the game.

DOCTOR’S ADVICE 1 He had the injury examined by a doctor In the hope that he might be able to lead Canterbury in the i good will tourney against Nelson, Marlborough and Hutt Valley but was told that he would not be able to , have the stitches out until Friday at the earliest His fellow New Zealand representative, P. Stigley, who led Canterbury to victory over Otago last Friday, will again captain the side. The team is: Stigley, B.

Beard, T. Guthrie (University), Fairweather (Checkers), R. Millard, B. Bredahl, B. Shipley (Y.M.C.A.), A. Hounsell, K. Luxton (Old Boys). Canterbury’s second New Zealand trialist, H. Dimmock (Y.M.C.A.), was not available, and his team-mate, M. Clements, was not considered because he had been unable to attend practice. The Checkers captain, G. Nobbs, has withdrawn from the squad. Canterbury won the Canadian Goodwill Trophy last season for the first time in nine years. This time it faces the prospect of playing all three of its matches on the same day. It will meet Hutt Valley on Saturday morning, Marlborough in the afternoon and Nelson in the evening.
