WELLINGTON, April 23. The number of unemployed registered with the Labour Department had increased 298, from 1121 at March 26 to 1419 at April 16, said the Minister of Labour (Mr Marshall) today.
Of these 748 were receiving unemployment benefit. Male enrolments had risen 260 and females 38. Increased enrolments could be expected at this time of the year as seasonal work falls off, Mr Marshall said.
District figures, those of March 26 in brackets, include: Blenheim 7 (2), Nelson 5 (8), Greymouth 53 (43), Christchurch 217 (126), Timaru 13 (6), Oamaru 9 (7), Dunedin 32 (19), Invercargill 40 (21).
