Crumbs from the police search
Children in the Fisher Avenue area were still excitedly fishing about in the Heathcote River late yesterday for loose coins left after policemen abandoned their search for bags of coins stolen in a recent burglary. The burglars, evidently at a loss what to do with the money—almost $4OOO in 20c, 2c and 1c coins—must have thrown the bags in the river. Some money has been recovered from the Beckenham Park pool. 'Police with scuba diving gear, groping in the mud of the river, attracted the attention of schoolchildren —and the word got round.
The police had concentrated on looking for the bags and were not inclined to waste time trying to dig out coins from the river.
It was left to the children to pick up the crumbs. One boy gathered about $1 worth, but most were less successful.
