Amalgamation proposals

A joint meeting of Banks Peninsula county councils and the Lyttelton Borough Council will be called by the Heathcote County Council to see what points can be agreed to for submission to the Local Government Commission.

The Mount Herbert County Council at its meeting yesterday agreed to attend. Heathcote’s letter of invitation said that Heathcote’s plan for the reorganisation of the local bodies seemed to be generally acceptable, and it was desirable to get mutual agreement, as the commission’s draft-scheme for North Canterbury was expected soon. Heathcote’s plan is to create a new combined council district, bounded by the Heathcote River and including the rest of the Peninsula. "I wish we could say that that plan was generally acceptable,” said Mount Herbert’s chairman (Mr E. R. Radcliffe). "It may be to Heathcote, Mount Herbert, and Akaroa, but not to all.” Answering Cr C. C. Manson, Mr Radcliffe said the meeting would not be trying to push the commission.
