Heathcote to change rubbish collection
The Heathcote County Council will adopt the use of paper-bags in its rubbish • collection services.
A meeting of the council last evening decided to provide for the change in this year’s estimates, and to issue each householder with a bagholder and 50 bags, free of charge. The County Clerk (Mr K. D. Stills) said that the holders would cost the council between $4500 and $6250. While plastic bags would be satisfactory, he was not con-
vinced that they would decompose, and layers of plastic in a rubbish pit might cause problems.
Refused.— “ The council expects better accommodation to be provided by a Government department,” the town planning committee reported. The council refused permission for the Railways Department to have a standard railway sleeping hut situated at 80 Martindales Road. No stopping.—After the Ministry of Transport had reported that a pedestrian crossing was not warranted at the new Cashmere playground, the council decided to prohibit vehicles from stopping on the playground frontage. Pensioners. A special meeting of the finance committee was arranged to discuss the provision of pensioner housing on land at Martindales Road or Thorrington Street.
