Food prices compared

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright)

LONDON, April 22. Food prices in Common Market countries are, on average, little higher than in Britain, according to a Conservative Party booklet published today. One or two items, and especially butter, are more expensive, but many others, such as fruit, vegetables and milk, are cheaper in Europe. The booklet, entitled “The Housewife and the Common Market,” was written by Mrs Diana Ellis, a barrister” who spends some of her time in Italy, where she has a farm. Fears that Britain will be flooded with foreign workers are utterly groundless, Mrs Ellis says, adding that although most people think of Italians in terms of migrant labourers, the rise in living standards in Italy is now encouraging them to return home.
