ADDINGTON MARKET Firm sale for adult store cattle

A yarding of more than 1200 adult store cattle brought firm prices at the Addington market yesterday. Breeding cows, tested in calf, were in strong demand, the best fetching $l3l.

For store lambs and store sheep the inquiry was very limited, only the best selling up to last week’s rates.

The store sheep yarding was 4720, compared with 2380 last week, and comprise 3020 wether lambs, 560 ewe lambs and 1140 adult sheep. Entries in the adult store cattle section rose from 300 to 1240.

Store lambs Apart from a tew forwardconditioned lots, store lambs had a hard sale. A small gallery followed the sale, and buying inquiry was very limited. Romney and Down cross lambs sold much on a par with last sale, but halfbreds and Corriedales were again easier, with very few of them fetching more than $4.

The yarding was a typical end-of-season selection, although it included a number of pens of well-grown dne-woolled lambs. Very few shorn Romneys were included.

Woolly Romneys in forward order sold from $4.30 to $4.70, with small down to $3.60. Most of the carry-over halfbreds ranged from $3 to $4, with an odd sale of big lambs to $4.70. Odd lots of Dorset Down cross lambs ranged from $5 to SS.SO. Only half a dozen pens of ewe lambs were offered, the main entry being three pens of woolly Corriedales showing some quality and breeding. Prices ranged from $5.30 to $6, which was quite good for the season. Sales of store lambs included:—

Wether lambs: Okuku Hills Station (Lees Valley), 336 halfbreds at $3 to $4; Gudex Brothers, Ltd (Whiterock), 293 halfbreds at $3.30 to $4.10; Lands and Survey Department (Ahaura), 240 shorn Romneys at $3.45 to $3.90; R. Adult sheep Adult breeding ewes met a limited inquiry. Apart from four pens quality was poor, the yarding including quite a number of old ewes in very light condition. Principal sales included two pens of one-year Romneys carrying a fair growth of wool, at $4.65 to $4-90, and two pens of

fine-woolled aged ewes at $4.40 and $4.50. Plainer old ewes sold in the $3 to $3.50 range. Several small pens of two-tooth wethers were included in the yarding, and prices ranged from $5.55 to $6.20. Sales of adult sheep included:— Wethers: A. F. McArthur and Sons (Whitecliffs), 62 two-tooth Romneys at $6.20. Adult cattle

Although the buying gallery was much smaller than usual, adult store cattle met a steady demand, with steers selling much on a par with recent rates. Rising two-year-old steers accounted for 60 per cent of the entry. Good average Herefords sold from SIOO to sllO, with an odd sale to sll4, and smaller from SB7 to $95.
