Detainees in China
(N.Z P.k.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, April 21.
China had told Britain that the four British subjects still detained in China were in good health, a Foreign Office spokesman said last week. This was the first time China had given Britain information about the four detainees. It was given to Mr John Denson, the British Charge d’Affaires in Peking, when he called at the Chinese Foreign Ministry on April 8.
He was told that the four British subjects were still under investigation, and that Chinese regulations laid down that prisoners in such circumstances could not be visited or receive letters or parcels. The four are: Mrs Elsie Epstein, Mr Michael Shapiro, Mr David Crook and Mrs Gladys Yang. Relations between Britain and China have improved in recent months, having reached their lowest point during the height of the Cultural Revolution in August, 1967, when the British Diplomatic Mission in Peking was attacked by Chinese demonstrators.
