Gas escapes at factory

Ammonia gas from a burst refrigeration pipe spread through part of a chicken processing factory at Bromley yesterday. Sixty workers had to ieave while the factory was cleared of gas and 1500 processed chickens were ruined.

The pipe burst in the refrigeration chamber of Prairie Gold Products, Ltd, in Senior Place, just before 9 a.m. Evacuation orders were immediately given, and the fire brigade was called. Employees using respiratory gear managed to turn off a tap to the broken pipe, and prevented gassing 2000 chickens on the killing line and another 2000 chickens waiting to be killed in another part of the factory. After the broken pipe was found, firemen with breathing apparatus ventilated the affected part of the factory, and employees were able to return to work about 11 a.m.

The company’s marketing manager (Mr T. J. Rait) said that 1500 chickens, worth about $l5OO, had to be dumped as they were contaminated by the gas in the cooling chamber.
