Food scarce in east

Sixteen thousand islanders in eastern Fiji are running short of food, and today the Government advised them to eat less.
Food supplies in the remote'Lau group are scarce because of the national waterfront strike, now in its fourteenth day. The Commissioner for the Eastern District (Ratu George Mataika) replied with an “eat less” appeal to a message from Lauan leaders that shops in the islands had run out of supplies.
He said that the Government could not do anything at present because of the danger of interfering with negotiations. But the Fiji Dockworkers’ Union, which is seeking a 100 per cent pay rise from 32c an hour, today said it would not resume its talks with the shipping companies until the Government committee of inquiry into the dispute had made its report
