FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A shallow depression over the South Island and its associated weak cold front are moving east and should lie east of New Zealand today; another cold front is advancing rapidly east across the Tasman sea.
Forecast: Canterbury.—Moderate north-westerlies developing and freshening; fine, mild weather predominating, but some rain developing in the Alps in the afternoon. Nelson and Marlborough.—North to north-west winds, mainly moderate to fresh, but strong at times about Cook Strait; partly cloudy and mild. Buller and Westland. —Moderate to fresh northerlies developing; rather cloudy, rain spreading from the south in the afternoon; temperatures moderate. Outlook: unsettled in Buller and Westland; elsewhere fair, apart from showers in the far western ranges. CHRISTCHURCH READINGS
