Jackpot not won (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. The jackpot pool at Grey- ' mouth last evening increased ,to $8905 to $20,052 but it was not won. There were 18 live i tickets in the final race, the . Union Handicap, but none selected the winner Tommy j Derby. The runner-up, Winter Queen, was the hot fancy, carrying the hopes of six ticket holders. Frenchelle and Newport Mon each carried three tickets and single tickets were invested on j Morar, Beachcomber, Hard ; Frost, Musterer, Our Mandy, and Owanga. There were several fairly substantial investments but only one approached the $2OOO jnark. The jackpot attracted one of the largest crowds to have attended the course for many years and both on and off-course betting figures were well above the average. On-course investments amounting to $65,858 were up $34,835 and off-course betting rose bv $60,517 to $239,053.50.

Fire in stand (N.Z. Press Association) GREYMOUTH. A small fire broke out ni the main grandstand at Victoria i Park Raceway, Greymouth,. minutes before the running of the seventh race, the Royal Handicap last night, and patrons were advised to leave it. Many did so, without panic? but others stayed to watch thes race and Greymouth firemen; whose siren added to the noise: of the race finish, dealt with ■ some charred pannelling in the front of the broadcasting box ■ in the main seating arena. Little damage was caused by the fire, seemingly started by al i cigarette butt.
