TROTTING Radiant Globe’s defeat cost betters thousands

(From Our Own Reporter) I GREYMOUTH. I Win bets of $13,3361 and doubles bets of $65,732.50 were lost when the hot favourite, Radiant Globe, failed by a short length to catch Snowline in the Victoria Park Free - for - all at Greymouth last evening. Radiant Globe’s place bac-:

kers received a dividend of 90c for a $l. Snowline, at surprisingly long odds of more than 16/1 considering her wins at Hutt Park and Alexandra Park earlier in the month, moved up wide out near the half-mile, took the lead at the two furlongs and established a winning break before the straight entrance. Radiant Globe ran into trouble in the middle stages, losing a handy position. He gave the winner a start of

close to five lengths racing to the straight and fought on gamely for his placing. Regal Hanover, which had his chance, was only half a length away third, with a similar gap to the tiring Royal Count. None of the others looked a danger over the final furlong. Snowline is trained at Templeton by J. Grant and D. G. Jones for Mr W. H. McAughtrie, of Omarama, for 'whom she has now had 12 wins and M placings worth $19,340. Earlier in the night Snowline’s daughter, Snow Chick, won the First Gilmer Handicap, first leg of the on-course double.

Tommy Derby, a brother to the good winner, Trampus, received the run of the race throughout the Union Handicap and he drew out in the run home to beat the pacemaker, Winter Queen, by two and a half lengths. His win was a major surprise as he had failed badly at his two previous starts earlier in the month. He was tenth favourite and paid $23 for a win. Winter Queen made a game effort to save backers of her more favoured stablemate, Kaipuke Song, which broke hopelessly at the start. She lasted for second a length in front of Hard Frost, which covered extra ground over the last half mile. Beachcomber, Orient Hanover and Slumber On headed the remainder without looking likely to return a dividend.
