Aust. entry problem
(N.Z.P.A Stag Correspondent) CANBERRA, March 29. The Australian Cabinet reshuffle will probably delay a decision on whether restrictions on entry into Australia by New Zealanders of Asian origin will be eased. Entry visas have been under discussion for some months by both countries at Ministerial level. The Minister for Immigration in Mr Gorton’s Government (Mr Lynch) had been handling the matter but had not reached the stage of making a submission to Cabinet. The new Prime Minister (Mr McMahon) replaced him with Dr Forbes and it will take some time for the Minister to become fully acquainted with his portfolio. It is not known how urg-
ently he will treat the matter. New Zealand has been pressing Australia to relax its restrictions against New Zealanders of Asian origin' for some time. At present these citizens have to apply to the Australian authorities for entry permission before leaving New Zealand. They have to produce evidence of New Zealand birth or naturalisation. Australians similarly placed have to produce such evidence only on arrival in New Zealand. Australia’s entry conditions have caused some friction. Maoris, generally, have no problems entering Australia, but Islanders have encountered difficulties. Last August, Sir Keith Holyoake said New Zealand proposed to take up the question with Australia "at the highest level.” It is believed that New
Zealand has met Australia’s requirements for full details and submissions on its position, and all that remains is consideration by the Australian Cabinet.
