Rugby man dies
Mr W. H. Lodge, a member of the Merivale Rugby Club for more than 50 years, and a prominent Canterbury administrator in the 19505, died yesterday, aged 76. Mr Lodge became associated with the Merivale clujs after World War I, and in subsequent years filled aH administrative posts in th> club, culminating in his being elected a life member. In. a brief period in Timaru, hjp also coached the Star senior team. g As a member of the Canterbury Rugby Union management committee for more than 10 years, Mr Lodge was chairman of the entertainments and competition committees, and also managed Canterbury teams on North Island tours, and in Ranfurly Shield matches.
He played senior Rugby for Merivale, as a front-row forward in the old 2-3-2 scrummage formation days, and represented Canterbury in the late 19205.
In later years, he was: a very keen bowler at the Canterbury Bowling Club. Mr Lodge is survived by his wife.
