Bailey out of rep. football
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. R. Bailey, New Zealand Rugby league’s most experienced footballer, has finished with first-class games. “I am going to enjoy playing football for Ponsonby,” said Bailey. Asked if he would be available for Auckland teams, Bailey said: “I don’t think there would be any sense being available when it’s obvious I cannot go any further.” He was rejected by the national selectors for the World Cup squad after being vicecaptain in the three tests against Britain earlier in the year.
He leaves international football at the young age of 28, with 81 games, including 29 tests, for New Zealand behind him. He has scored a record 37 tries for the Kiwis since his first tour in 1961.
