ENTRIES IN SQUASH

More teams than ever

There are record entries In the Canterbury Squash Rackets Association’s competition, which begins on Saturday, April 17. A total of 85 teams—66 men’s and 19 women’s—have entered. This year’s A grade men’s competition is made up of six teams —three from the Christchurch club, and one each from Burnside, University, and High School Old Boys. An entry has been made by Old Collegians for the second round of the competition, which will be played on Tuesday evenings. The first round matches are to be on Saturday afternoons.

A decision to play the women’s A grade on Saturday afternoons (which has to be confirmed by the management committee on Thursday night) has enabled the competition committee, headed by Mr R. Frengley, to accept all teams nominated by clubs, because of the greater availability of courts.

This, together with the earlier decision to play the first round of the men’s A grade on Saturday’s, has been taken to make squash rackets a major sport in Canterbury, instead of in many cases, a useful means of attaining peak fitness for other sports. If the success of this move matches that of a similar one made by the Canterbury Men’s Indoor Basketball Association three years ago. it will be of lasting benefit to the sport.
