Three men retire from firm
Three employees of John Bums and Company with a combined service of 114 years were last evening presented with superannuation cheques from the chairman of directors (Mr A. G. BrownDouglas). They are the firm’s assistant manager, Mr J. E. Phillips, the sales controller, Mr A. J. Hendry, and Mr J. Taylor, a storeman in the roofing division. Mr Hendry joined the company in 1924 as a hardware salesman and in 1927 he was made travelling representative in North Canterbury. He held this post for 41 years until he was made sales controller in 1968. The company’s assistant manager for the South Island, Mr Phillips is retiring after almost 40 years of service. He began in Greymouth and. after moving to Timaru, and then back to Greymouth, he was made assistant manager based in Christchurch in 1954. Mr C. J. Taylor has been in 1 the roof contracting division for 28 years. In 1969 he suffered serious injuries in a fall from a roof and since then has worked as a storeman. The three men will retire officially on March 31. They were also presented with gifts bought with subscriptions by their fellow employees.
