Promising game ends tamely

Poised tor an exciting finish, i the match at Elmwood Park came to a tame ending as the rain prevented any play after tea with Old Collegians In an excellent position to gain outright points from East-Shirley. In the morning Old Collegians lost five wickets in adding the first 24 runs to the stumps score of the previous week, 128 for one. It was only some-hard hitting by the lower order batsmen which enabled the side to finish 20 runs behind East-Shirley. Each side gained three bonus points to give East 10 for the match and Old Collegeians seven. After Old Collegians had taken East ,- first wicket in the second Innings, the side remained on top. After lunch East lost wickets in a dramatic fashion and at one stage it was eight for five wickets. In N. F. Curtis’s fourth over, V. Pollard, who had taken six for 54 In the morning’s play trebled East’s score by scoring 16 runs, but East had still taken 43 minutes to Veach double figures.

Then, as the gale reached Its height, East produced a stubborn effort as N. M. Pitches and G. D. V. Pulley put on a valuable 20 runs for the eighth wicket in 52 minutes.

Before this, it appeared certain that the innings would provide the lowest total of the season as T. D. Gibson produced one of the 'finest efforts in his bowling career—six for 14 from 11 overs.

The unkind weather finally arrived in the last two hours of the season, when the situation was ripe for one of the best finishes.

Umpires: Messrs J. W. Streeter and W. R. Hobbs.
