Riccarton wins in spite of break

. Just as Lancaster Park, at the other end of Hagley Oval, appeared to have been deprived of a win by the wind and rain, so Riccarton must have felt especially annoyed by the weather.

It needed only 46 to beat Sydenham outright, and was moving comfortably to that when play was held up for nearly two hours, with just a brief return to the field before tea. That break looked as if it might have been disastrous for Riccarton, too, because there were a number of black, threatening clouds lurking overhead. G. R. McAulay, in possibly his final game for the club, batted brightly in the gloomy conditions, and saw Riccarton to its win.

As so often in the last 15 years, Riccarton owed a great deal for its win to J. W. Kiddey. The pitch at Hagley 3 was certainly not very good, but Kiddey used it well, as he so often does,

and removed the top of the Syi enham batting ih short time.

The brothers Hartland batted usefully for 18 each, but it was left to the seventh wicket pair, R. L. McHarg and B. J. Salt, to restore a hint of respectability to the innings. Salt made a chanceless 34.

Although more batting points could not be won, Riccarton had batted on in the morning. D. W. Stead took the opportunity to make his highest score of the season—and only his second 50—and D. A. Dempsey embellished his reputation. The spinner/s, Salt and A. D. J. Glen, were the most successful bowlers for Sydenham. Umpires: Messrs F. R. Goodall and V. Woods.
