Play in senior cricket stopped by wind

For the first time in at least recent memory play in senior cricket—not to mention other grades—was stopped by wind on Saturday. But although the two matches at Hag ley Oval resumed after a break of nearly two hours, where the other games did not, the competition was hardly affected.

West - University, which finished its match with Old Boys early, had already won the competition, but in the jockey-i ing for second placed Riccarton won the minor | honour when it had an' easy win against Sydenham.

St Albans went very close to preserving its second place, but Lancaster Park snatched a one-wicket win from the penultimate ball. Old Collegians and EastShirley finished early because of rain, and in the time that

I was used, East-Shirley took ’most of the honours of the first innings. Penetrating bowling by T. D. Gibson had East-Shirley reeling when the match was abandoned. Scores:—

West-University 224 and 136/5 drew with H. 5.0.8.. 207/8 dec. Lancaster Park 183 I and 102/9 beat St Albans 193/9 dec. and 89 by one wicket. Riccarton 260/9 dec. and . 46/0 beat Sydenham 100/8 dec. and 125 by 10 wickets. EastShirley 250/9 dec. and 50/9 drew with Old Collegians 220. A little surprisingly, at the end of a productive summer, it was not a day of great joy for batsmen. D. W. Stead went on to make 79 for Riccarton, easily his best score of the season; and in the match at Dam, B. F. Hast-

ings (West-University) made 57 and C. L. Bull (Old Boys’) 66 which left the latter six runs short of his 500 for the season. G. Mathias, for Old Collegians, advanced his resumed innings to 70.

Old heads triumphed mainly in bowling. As well as Gibson’s six for 14 against East-Shirley, B. C. Irving had seven for 39 against St Albans to take him to 54 wickets for the season, eight behind another off-spinner, P. A. Sharp (West-University). Yet another off-spinner, V. Pollard (East-Shirley) took six wickets to Jake his total to 51.

Another very experienced player, J. W. Kiddey (Riccarton) took five for 49 against Sydenham, which made his total 52 the seventh time in a career which started 23 years ago that he has taken 50 or more wickets in a season.

And two more slow bowlers had very good figures. B. J. Salt had five for 69 for Sydenham, and J. A. Harrison all but bowled St Albans to a win with

In the table of points below, it is significant that West-Uni-versity scored the most bonus points for bowling, and also had more outright wins than all but 2. ne , «9 ther team. Conversely, East-Shirley had easily the most batting points, but could win only one game outright.

East-Shirley and St Albans each scored 72 bonus points. and WestrUnlversity 71. Bonus Win Ch.
