Records broken at inter-school sports

Nine records or best performances were broken and another four equalled at the boys’ and girls’ inter . secondary school athletics championships at Rugby Park on Saturday. As well as inter-school records being broken a Canterbury boys’ under 15 record was set in the junior boys’ hurdles, which was run over 100 metres for the first time.

The girts’ sports in the morning accounted for eight of the records broken or equalled, while the boys added another five during the afternoon. Three of the boys’ records and one by a girl will not gain recognition,

however, because of wind assistance, which gusted on occasions to many times the allowable maximum. It was significant that no records were broken in the round-the-track races earlier in the afternoon, the boys having to face fairly strong gusts in the home straight A south-west change of gale force proportions almost ruled out the continuation of the meeting later.

The wind change wreaked havoc; swirling dust cut visibility; thousands of leaves spiralled above grandstand height; hurdles were toppled; and it was impossible, to keep the bar on the high jump standards. The meeting came to a temporary standstill, with many competitors, officials, and spectators scurrying for shelter.

Even when the meeting resumed the wind strength was such that runners in the longer races looked as if they were battling against an invisible wall —their progress was so slow at times as they crouched low against the wind. Nearing the end of the programme competitors in the 1500 metres event had their lot made even more miserable by cold, driving rain. Records were set or equalled as follows, with best times being listed for the girls where events have been held for less than three years:—

Girls.—Senior: L. Trimble (Christchurch Girls’ High School), 60 metres, 7.Bsec in a heat (a best performance, former time Bsee); 200 metres, 26.1 sec, equals record. Miss Trimble and D. Munro (Burnside High School) both equalled the former best time for the 60 metres in the final Intermediate: C. Benseman (Riccarton High School), long jump, 16ft lOiln (16ft BJin). P. Flynn (Cashmere High School), shot, 30ft 9}in (30ft Oito). Junior: K. Hoskin (Malrehau High School), 60 metres, B.4sec, equals best time. B. Peterson (Hillmorton High School), 200 metres, 27.75ec, equals record. V. Krozanlc (Hagley High School), long jump, 15ft lljln (15ft lOJln). Boys. Intermediate: M. Sutherland (Burnside High School), 100 metres, 11.3 sec, equals record. Junior: E. Hamilton (Shirley Boys* High School), 200 metres, 23.95ec (24.25ec). Performances ruled out for records because of wind assis-

Girls.—lntermediate long jump, P. Devine (Villa Maria College), 16ft HJin. Boys, Senior: 200 metres. G. Wislang (Linwood High School), 22.45ee (22.55ec). Intermediate 100 metres hurdles: L. Wislang • (Linwood High School), 14.3 sec (ISsec). Under 14 200 metres, . C. Muir (Burnside High School), 24.8 sec (25.35ec). Stepping up of the boy’s junior grade hurdles from 80 metres to 100 metres robbed R. Keddell

(St Bede’s College) of any chance of breaking an existing interschool record. Keddell had the satisfaction of being the only one to qualify for a Canterbury provincial record, setting a new time for the under 15 grade with 16sec.
