Assault on constable
(N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS, March 28. Constable J. Beardsley, of Hastings, was injured last night in an incident outside a tavern. It was the third time this year he had been injured in attacks. Nine policemen made five arrests from a group of more than a 100 outside the tavern, and during the incident Constable Beardsley was kicked on the head. Today his eyes were swollen and his face cut
After closing time at the Lion Tavern, a large group refused to leave the bar and police arrested one of the ringleaders. When they tried to put him in a police van they were prevented by the crowd.
Before police reinforcements arrived fighting broke out and Constable Beardsley was assaulted.
