Pledge to Ford men

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright)

LONDON, March 28.

West German trade union chiefs have given a pledge that while Britain’s 50,000 Ford workers continue their eight-week-old strike, they will not tolerate overtime or strike-breaking at Ford plants in Germany. The pledge was given at a meeting in London yesterday between leaders of the German Metalworkers’ Union, which has over two million members, and representatives of the striking British workers. The German Union leaders said that they would call for their members’ support "in an appropriate way,” and that they had already told management officials of this decision.

They added that the falloff in Ford production in Britain had already made 4500 workers redundant at the Ford plant at Saarlouis, on the French-Gennan border near Luxemburg.'

Earlier in the week, car workers’ union chiefs from 19 countries had made a "cash-if-you-want-it” promise to the British Ford workers.
