Mindszenty 79 today

'■ The Hungarian Government is ready to consider almost any concession to allow the Primate of Hungary (Cardinal Jozsef Mindszenty) to end his 14 years of self-exile in the United States Embassy in Budapest, according to Hungarian sources.
But, they say, the Government will not allow the Primate to act as an archbishop and priest in Hungary again. For that reason, he is expected to refuse the offer, and remain where he is. Short of that one stipulation, the Hungarian Government will consider dropping all charges against the cardinal, and allow him to live in Hungary or go to the Vatican. Cardinal Mindszenty, who will be 79 tomorrow, is a fervent opponent of the Communists, and a royalist who was tried for high treason in 1949 and sentenced to life imprisonment During the 1956 uprising he was freed briefly, and made a speech opposed to communism from the Parliament Building in Budapest. When Soviet Union tanks rolled into the capital, Cardinal Mindszenty fled to the United States Legation—"because it was closest,” according to eye-witnesses—and has remained there since.
