Kainga
Sir, —Regarding the controversy over the spelling of Kainga, the original name was Kaianga, but in World War 11, in the early 19405, the then Waimairi Council in its wisdom and patriotic fervour changed the name to Kainga. This was to honour the name of New Zealand's flying ace "Cobber” Kain. This could be verified by die council’s records. Yours, etc,. FACTS. March 16, 197 L
[Mr J. Reid, the Waimairi County- Clerk, replies: “The council’s minute books from 1936 to 1944 have been perused, but no reference can be found relating to the name ‘Kainga’ or to a change in the spelling of it to honour the name ‘Cobber Kain,’ as is suggested by the correspondent. Information received from the Department of Lands and Survey, however, supports the correctness of the name as being ’Kainga.’ ”]
