Frigate marks birthday
The ship’s company of the Royal New Zealand Navy frigate Taranaki, some of whom are seen at left, celebrated, the ship’s tenth birthday at a special luncheon party on board at Lyttelton yesterday. The party was held under an awning rigged on the fo’c’sle. The frigate is visiting Lyttelton on a training cruise, and although her birthday is not officially until today, ‘it was celebrated yesterday at noon for convenience.
The Taranaki has 14 officers, 23 chief petty officers, 27 petty officers, 101 leading and able ratings, and 71 yourig ratings. Nearly all were present. Birthday cake
A birthday cake was especially baked and iced for the occasion by Leading Cook N. Neilson, of Balclutha. It was cut jointly by the frigate’s commander (Commander N, R. Win), formerly of Christchurch, and Junior Seaman K. J. Sweeney, of Timaru. The party took the form of a buffet luncheon and the menu included chicken, oysters, crayfish, steak, sausages, cold meats, salad, tomatoes, jacket and fried potatoes, and ice-cream. Today the Taranaki’s crew will be host to 100 underprivileged children at another party on board. Tomorrow the ship will be open to the public, and she will sail for Auckland on Monday.
