COASTAL TANKER SOLD
The 2928-ton coastal tanker Maurea (above), which has been laid up in Lyttelton since last July awaiting a buyer, has now
been sold to Ocean Bitumen Carriers, Ltd. The Maurea, which was built by Smith’s Dock Company, Ltd, In Britain in 1952, was originally named Fragum.and traded around the English coast until she was bought by Shell Oil (N.Z.), Ltd, In 1964. She was replaced by the larger tanker, Erne, in the New Zealand coastal trade. The Erne was introduced to the New Zealand trade to distribute bitumen and various grades of fuel oil as well as taking Kapunl condensate to the Marsden Point oil refinery from New Plymouth. The Maurea is expected to sail for Singapore early next month. Next week she will enter the Lyttelton graving dock for inspection and maintenance.
Bill protest.—About 400 people walked along Queen Street at noon yesterday carrying placards protesting about the new wage bill. The walk was organised by the Auckland branch of the Seamen’s Union. Boilermakers supported the seamen; and there were a number of students and women.
