N.Z. TEAM PRAISED

Speedboat contest (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copt/rioM) MELBOURNE. Australian speedboat enthusiasts are preparing for a strong challenge from New Zealand’s team in the C. E. Griffith Cup. The event for unlimited, unrestricted speedboats, will be raced on Lake Eppalock, Victoria, on Easter Sunday. Local officials describe the official New Zealand entry of Air New Zealand (J. and K. McGregor, Auckland) and Voodoo IV (W. Stokes, New Brighton) as strong contenders in a bid to regain the cup. The main defender will be the Victorian boat, Stampede, owned by S. Jones and R. Saniga. Powered by a Vl2 Rolls Merlin engine, Stampede recently beat the Australian speed record by 16 m.p.h., in recording 154.34 m.p.h. Air New Zealand holds its national record of 132 mp.h. but is reported to have had a more powerful engine installed.

Six other top Victorian boats will support stampede, and the New South Wales challenge is headed by the veteran E. Nunn, in his new and untried Wasp Two. Nunn won the Griffith Cup in 1945, 1962 and 1965.
