Charolais imports
Eleven Charolais heifers bought by Canterbury breeders in the United Kingdom last year arrived in Christchurch by air from Wellington on Thursday. They were part of a consignment of 16 Charolais cattle, which had been in quarantine at Somes Island since arriving in New Zealand.
According to the stud stock department of the NMA Company, which arranged the importations, the 16 cattle were worth more than $250,000 landed. Some of the beasts cost up to $20,000 landed. The Canterbury purchasers are: Mount Peel station, (2), M. J. Davison, Culverden (1), D. E. Robertson, Motunau (5), J. E. Austin. View Hill (2), J. M. Sutherland, Waimate (1). Commenting on the value of the consignment, Mr Sutherland said that most of the cattle had been bought from the earnings of Charo-lais-cross cattle exported by New Zealand breeders to Australia. The stud stock officer of the NMA Company at Christchurch (Mr P. H. Sibley) said that up to 150 applications to import Charolais cattle might be sought within the next two years.
