Property thefts from vehicles
More than $9OOO worth of property was reported stolen from vehicles in the Christchurch police district in the first two months of this year.
Of the 200 reported thefts 81 occured from unlocked cars.
“We have had an instance of electrical equipment and musical gear worth S6OO stolen from an unlocked car,” the head of the C. 1.8. in Christchurch (Detective Superintendent B. Wilkinson) said yesterday. In January 129 thefts involving $6063 worth of property were reported. Of these 11 were through unlocked windows, 49 through unlocked doors, and 47 by foj|ced entry. Thefts of exterior fittings totalled 22. In February 81 thefts were reported. Six of these were through unlocked windows, 25 through unlocked doors, and 27 by forced entry; there were 23 thefts of exterior fittings. “Because of the type of
goods stolen we have a certain amount of difficulty in tracing the stolen property, but I would estimate about 80 per cent is recovered,” Mr Wilkinson said.
