Three to pick gymnastic teams

Canterbury gymnastics will have a selection panel—of three members—for the first time.

The annual general meeting of the provincial association last evening approved a suggestion from a vicepresident, Mr W. M. Duncan, that this panel be elected hy the executive, from club’s nominations. “We have gone past the stage of only a limited number of female competitors in Christchurch being available —and selection not being required,” said Mr Duncan. “In the last two years, there has been a big increase in standard and numbers, and I think it is time to have a

selection panel. This way, those vying for selection have a chance of being chosen honestly and fairly,” said Mr Duncan. Mr C. A. R. Buchanan, who suggested the panel should number three, said: “It would be necessary if we continue to grow as we have.” Registration fees were doubled. The new figures are $3 (seniors) and $1.50 (juniors). HONOURED “Jill is perhaps New Zealand’s most consistent gymnast,” said Mr S. E. Brooks, the president, when presenting Miss J. Buchanan with a new trophy at the meeting. The trophy, given by Mr and Mrs Brooks, was for the Canterbury gymnast who did most to

bring credit to the sport in the province. Miss Buchanan, said Mr Brooks, had exceeded all previous efforts by New Zealand gymnasts at the World Games in Jugoslavia. Miss L. Blaikie was presented with the Danish Award, for services to the sport, not necessarily as a competitor but also for coaching and administrative work. Officers: Patron, Mr A. R. Guthrey; vice-patron, Mr Kingscote; president, Mr Brooks; vicepresidents, Messrs D. Burrows and Duncan; secretary, Mrs M. Cornes; treasurer, Mrs Brooks; auditor, Mr C. L.
