Bentley rally

An expensive cavalcade will be seen on roads leading to Mount Cook tomorrow when 26 Bentley cars, ranging in value from $4OOO to $24,000, will take part in a national alpine rally. This is the biggest number to take part in a rally in New Zealand. The oldest car is a 1923 model and the latest a 1968 model. Nine cars will come from the North Island.

No competition exists because the cars have been given five hours to travel the 140 miles to Mount Cook. The cavalcade will leave from Fendalton at 9 a.m. tomorrow, travelling by way of Darfield through the gorges to Geraldine, Fairlie, over Burke’s Pass, and through the Mackenzie Country to the Glencoe Inn where a rally dinner will be held for the 80 persons on the run. This is the sixth such rally for Bentley owners. Others have involved drives from Christchurch to the West Coast, Queenstown, Nelson, Wanaka and the Lewis Pass.

Christchurch is thought to have more vintage Bentleys than any other town in the Dominion, although Auckland has the greatest number of new models.
