Shewetta might be too speedy

Bv

J. J. Boyle

She wet ta, the mightymidget of South Island sprinters, is equal to the task of leading all the way in the Provincial Handicap, second leg of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double tomorrow.

She won this race last year, then after two unplaced runs, carried off the Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton. Another Easter campaign at Riccarton will almost certainly be on her programme this year. Oamaru form will assure Tranquil Flight of a big following in the President’s Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double. This consistent Sabaean mare led close to home over a middle distance in Monday’s feature race but was pegged back to second by her close relation, Atomic Flight, ridden by E. J. Didham.

Tomorrow Didham will ride Tranquil Flight. Tranquil Flight is prepared by B. J. Anderton, whose brother, Hector, jun., trains Crown Agent, one of' the stronger form fancies in the second leg. Crown Agent, E. J. Didham’s sprint mount, won easily over seven furlongs on the second day at Cromwell after running Nigent to a

head on the first day of the meeting. Southland's top prospects in the feature races might be the recently-promoted Redlo and Bellaware in the President’s Handicap and Meldie in the Provincial Handicap. Redlo has won at four of his last five starts, and last time out he established a nine-furlong track record at Gore in winning in intermediate class. Hard-wearing Two starts earlier he won against hacks at Riccarton. He is a three-year-old by

Kurdistan, a sire of hardwearing horses, and his connections feel he has not yet developed his full powers. Bellaware was no match for the leniently-treated Pole Star in the main race at the Birchwood Hunt meeting last week. She might not have one quite as good so far below her in the weights this week. If there is enough rain to dull the brilliance of the swiftest of the sprinters Meldie might start his present campaign with a flourish. This will be his first start since November, but his fresh run might well be his best
