Namesakes to meet on stage
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Two big names in the record business, the United States country and western singer, Johnny Cash, and his namesake the racehorse, Johnny Cash, will be on stage together in Auckland on March 31. The two-legged Johnny Cash will be in Auckland to perform at Western Springs Stadium the same night. The four-legged Johnny Cash, ■who hails from Walton, near Matamata, will be handing over the $450 he has earned for the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Society. The two will meet in the turf bar of the Hotel InterContinental where the Johnny Cash entertainment group will be staying. The singer in the last 15 years has reeled off a string of hit songs and ballads. He has had 34 records in the United States top 10 and eight have been No. 1 hits.
The racehorse, Johnny Cash, has won $34,775. Several of New Zealand’s best handicap races have fallen to him and he has been placed in two Auckland Cups.
More significantly he has broken into the record business, too, in his own special way. He holds the New Zealand and Australian record for 12 furlongs, which he established at Trentham.
