NO CHEMICAL IN SUGAR
No trace of a chemical suggested' by an odour in some sugar sold in Christchurch had been found after laboratory tests in Wellington, the Health Department’s supervising inspector of health in Christchurch (Mr J. B. Snoad) said yesterday. Mr Snoad said it seemed that the sugar had merely absorbed an odour from something fairly strong nearby while it was being shipped from Auckland. A test had been made of a sample after a complaint by a Christchurch resident. Sucn tests had to be done in Wellington, where there was special equipment, as identifying an odour was “one of the most difficult things to pin down,” said Mr Snoad. He suggested that any more cases be taken up with the New Zealand Sugar Company.
