Call made to consul
The South African ConsulGeneral (Mr P. H. Philip) has been called on to reconsider his refusal to discuss publicly questions with Bishop Crowther concerning race relations. Bishop Crowther is the antiapartheid former Bishop of Kimberley. This call came on Wednesday from the research officer of the New Zealand Students’ Association (Mr L. R. Wright). “The refusal of Mr Philip to debate with Bishop Crowther is a clear case of ‘public backtracking’,” Mr Wright said. “Mr Philip is happy to travel around New Zealand visiting our schools and Rotary Clubs and preaching South Africa’s insidious message of white supremacy. Faced with the prospect of repeating this message in front of Bishop Crowther, Mr Philip has ducked for cover,” he said.
