Versatile experts

It was a case of experts finding a place in other fields when Banks Penin-

sula Federated Farmers held fleece and beef cattle weighing competitions at a field day at French Farm last week. After discussing flock sheep selection, the sheep and wool instructor for the Department of Agriculture at Christchurch (Mr L. Galloway) invited farmers to place five unshorn sheep in their correct order for weight of fleece While the sheep were being shorn, farmers moved to a cattle yard where Mr R. B. Johnson, of Mount Torlesse, discussed breeding and selection of the beef herd. His listeners were then invited to estimate the weight of two steers, a heifer and a vealer.

Results announced later in the day showed that Mr Johnson, who runs an Angus herd, had won the fleece weight competition, while Mr Galloway, was placed third in the beef guessing competition.
