BREWERY WORKERS
A national union Brewery workers have featured in almost as many take-overs recently as their employers. As a result, they are now organised in a single national union with just two branches: North Island and South Island. In the South Island, Nelson and Westland branch offices have been closed and the Otago and Southland union has been absorbed into the South Island branch of the New Zealand Brewery Workers’ Union. The union covers 400 workers in the South Island and a great many more in the north. In addition to brewers and malters, the members include soft-drink and winery workers, and negotiations are under way to provide coverage for vineyard workers. . The administration of the union is now in the hands of a national and North Island secretary (Mr C. K. Glendinning, of Auckland), a South Island secretary (Mr G. G. Walker, of Christchurch), and an agent in Dunedin (Mr G. S. Scoones).
