Stopbank policy

The Christchurch Drainage Board on Tuesday evening reaffirmed its policy that it was not responsible for the maintenance of stopbanks along the Heathcote River. This was decided after a complaint about a stopbank being breached on the property of the Ferrymead Trust. The complaint had been referred to both the Heathcote County Council and the board. The works committee report said that when stopbanks were repaired in the same vicinity in 1956, the board had assisted the council by providing free of charge a dragline in the area. The work had been done under the direction of the council. The board had, at that time, made it clear it did not accept any responsibility for the stopbanks. The board decided that a sub - committee should meet the council to explain the position and offer the use of a dragline under the same conditions as in 1956.
